Garma Festival - 2024

The Garma Festival is Australia’s premier Indigenous affairs event and is a celebration of Yolŋu cultural, artistic and ceremonial traditions.

The Garma Festival takes place every August over four days in East Arnhem Land with guests immersed in the rich cultural heritage of Yolŋu. The festival is held at the Gulkula site located 31 kilometres from Nhulunbuy, approximately half an hour’s drive.

The Garma Festival incorporates visual art, ancient storytelling, dance and music, as well as other important policy forums and education programs. Guests at the festival will experience a nightly traditional dance ceremony called a buŋgul, along with traditional music and celebration. During the day there are many activities to choose from, from high profile political speeches and education forums to traditional basket weaving and guided bush walks.

Garma is hosted by the Yothu Yindi Foundation, a not for profit Aboriginal corporation with all revenues from the festival going to the programs and projects of the Foundation.
