Overview

Gayŋaru Wetlands (Town Lagoon) Tours have now finished for the 2021 season. Tours will recommence in 2022 (dates to be confirmed in early 2022).

Take a guided tour through the pristine freshwater lagoon and coastal rainforest of Gayŋaru Wetlands (Town Lagoon) with a friendly guide from the Nhulunbuy Visitor Information Centre. On this tour you will learn about native bush food, wildlife and local history including the trade history between the Yolŋu of north-eastern Arnhem Land and the Macassans from the island of Sulawesi (now Indonesia).

Sightings of native birds that live in and around the wetlands include the northern fantail, blue-faced honeyeater, white-bellied cuckoo-shrike and the brown falcon and if you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a crocodile!

The start of the Gayŋaru Nature Walk where you will meet your tour group is about 700 meters from Nhulunbuy town centre and the walk is about a three kilometre round trail, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours.
