Psst ... six top locals' tips for visiting in Best Kept Season

EAST Arnhem Land is truly magical year-round, but between SEPTember and April the region REALLY comes alive.

Here’s our top SIX WAYS TO EXPERIENCE East Arnhem Land’s tropical summer.

1. GET HookED ON an EAST Arnhem Land barra

Ask any local when is the best time to catch a famous Territory barramundi and the answer will probably be during the Tropical Summer. This covers the periods known as the build-up and the run-off which are classed as the two best times to target the elusive barra and have the chance to snag a spot in the exclusive one-metre barra club! You can even try your luck and register for the Million Dollar Fish competition! Check out the fishing tours available in East Arnhem Land here, or read more about the NT fishing seasons here

2. Catch a famous tropical storm and lightning show

It's long been debated as to which is better, the Winter or the Summer season. But no matter what the answer is, the thrilling monsoonal storms are nearly always on the ‘pro's’ list for the Tropical Summer. There's something special about the relief the rain brings and the brilliant colours that come alive as the earth soaks it in.

3. Take to the air and marvel at Arnhem Land’s magnificent wetlands

There’s something truly magical about seeing the rivers and wetlands of Arnhem Land at their prime during the Tropical Summer. The river systems are alive, the abundant wildlife is thriving and the colours of the greening landscapes are indescribable. The best way to experience this natural wonder would have to be by air – check out some of the scenic flight options departing from Gove Airport here.

4. Absorb the epic sunsets

The sunsets over the Tropical Summer period are next level – believe us! While you could argue East Arnhem Land has amazing sunsets all year round, the sunsets over the Tropical Summer are particularly beautiful thanks to the colour-catching ability of clouds. A few of our favourite places to watch the sun go down around Nhulunbuy include Wirrwawuy (Cape Wirrawoi)Gove Boat Club and Dhamitjinya (East Woody Island).

5. BE COOL AT A WORLD-RENOWNED Art & CULTURAL Centre

On warmer days when you want to escape the heat, head indoors to one of the region's world-class art and cultural centres such as Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Art Centre in Yirrkala or the brand-new Gapuwiyak Culture and Arts. Take your time to browse the awe-inspiring galleries and select yourself something special to buy as a reminder of your time in East Arnhem Land.

6. TAKE TO THE SKIES AND FLY TO GOVE

Gove AirportGove AirportThe Central Arnhem Rd is one of Australia's great road trips, but the late summer months can bring spectacular monsoonal rain and the road can be closed for periods. But with Airnorth flying daily to Gove Airport in Nhulunbuy from Darwin and Cairns, you can still experience East Arnhem Land. Even if the road is open, hopping on a plane makes it an easy weekend or long-weekend getaway.
