Overview

Dhamitjinya (East Woody Island) is located just four kilometres from Nhulunbuy with easy access via a sealed road. The squeaky white sands of Galuru (East Woody Beach) are met by clear azure waters where you will often find shallow wading pools at low tide.

The walk over to Dhamitjinya will take you about 10 minutes along a sandspit where you can walk up the rocks to take in a breathtaking 360 degree view of Melville Bay and the coastline behind you. Access to the island can sometimes be affected due to high tides, double check with Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation for more information if you are unsure.

This area is a favourite with locals for taking in the sunset of an afternoon, a spot of fishing or a walk with their furry friends. Middle Beach and Wirrwawuy (Cape Wirrawoi) are located on the same stretch of beach as Galuru. Dhamitjinya is one of the few places in the world where you are spoilt with being able to watch both the sun rise and set in the same place due to its northernly location.
