Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula is the biggest town in East Arnhem and is a one-hour, 40-minute flight from Cairns, a one-hour, 10-minute flight from Darwin, or about a nine-hour drive from Katherine via the Central Arnhem Road. It was established in the 1960s to service a bauxite mine on the Peninsula and has grown to become the fourth-biggest town in the Northern Territory with a population of about 3500.
