The Andrew Gurruwiwi Band (who recently racked up 100k+ views with their East Arnhem Live set), young Indigenous leader/writer/singer Siena Stubbs, local music producer Kris Keogh and local digital media company Aris & Grimes helped the Nhulunbuy Djamarrkuḻi express their love for their hometown through music, dance and video.
The Nhulunbuy Djamarkuḻi (Nhulunbuy Kids in the local Yolŋu Matha) is the artist name the group decided on, consisting of 29 Yolngu (Indigenous) and Balanda (non-Indigenous) youth of Nhulunbuy aged between 10 and 18 years of age.
The song is a true melding of Yolŋu and Balanda cultures with all the participants singing in both Yolŋu Matha and English throughout the song. The song has a rock-solid Arnhem Land reggae groove with a modern trap twist, with the youth writing all the lyrics and collaborating on the music production.
The video, shot by Aris, was entirely conceptualised by the Nhulunbuy Djamarkuḻi, and sees them performing atop Nhulun (Mt. Saunders), in Gayngaru (Nhulunbuy Town Lagoon), at Galuru (East Woody Beach) and various youth hotspots around town like the skatepark, Pool, BMX track and even aisle 4 at the local Woolies.
The project, delivered by the Nhulunbuy Corporation in conjunction with Aris & Grimes, was a huge success and everyone involved would like to thank the Office of Youth Affairs - NT Government for the funding in association with the Nhulunbuy Youth Council.
