Overview

The Roy Marika Lookout is located at the summit of Nhulun (Mount Saunders), a sacred site of great significance to Yolŋu, and is the hill from which the Nhulunbuy township gets its name. The lookout is located on Wuyal Road and is easy to access with a sealed road taking you to the base of the lookout, and a short set of stairs to get to the top. You can also follow the Nhulunbuy Walk Trail Network Nhulun Walk from Nhulunbuy town centre to the Roy Marika Lookout for a four kilometre round trip.

Once at the top of the lookout you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Gayŋaru (Town Lagoon), Gove Harbour and surrounding pristine coastline, the Nhulunbuy township and the Rio Tinto bauxite mine. There is interpretive signage at the top that tells a brief history of the region and the Yolŋu story of the spirit man Wuyul who journeyed through the land searching for guku (honey).
